No. 4 Michigan State 87, Minnesota 75 (OT): Keith Appling scored eight of his team-high 24 points in overtime as the host Spartans held on to win their second straight overtime game.

Freshman forward Kenny Kaminski made his first five 3-pointers and scored a season-high 15 points off the bench for Michigan State (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten). Gary Harris picked up his fourth foul with more than six minutes left in regulation but stuck around to score 19 points for the Spartans, who played without second-leading scorer and rebounder Adreian Payne (foot sprain).

Andre Hollins scored 24 points to lead Minnesota (13-4, 2-2). Malik Smith came off the bench to score 11 of his 17 points in the first half and Elliott Eliason took advantage of Payne’s absence to contribute seven points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for the Golden Gophers.

Michigan State, which blew a 17-point lead with just over seven minutes left in regulation Tuesday before beating No. 3 Ohio State in overtime, scored the first nine points of the extra period. Appling, who scored six points in the last 34 seconds of overtime in the four-point win against the Buckeyes, went 8-for-8 from the line in overtime against Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers went without a field goal for more than 13 minutes in the second half, allowing Michigan State to turn a 10-point deficit into a six-point lead with 2:41 remaining. The Spartans then went without a field over the last 4:13 of regulation, opening the door for Minnesota to tie the score on DeAndre Mathieu’s layup with a second left after Harris had missed two free throws 10 seconds earlier.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota also missed out on a chance to beat Michigan without star C Mitch McGary in its conference opener on Jan. 2. … Michigan State G Travis Trice was doubtful after missing the Ohio State game with the flu but he ended up contributing four points in 19 minutes off the bench. … The teams combined to shoot 13-for-23 from 3-point range in the first half before combining to go 4-for-24 in the second half and overtime.
