Long Beach State 72, USC 71: Michael Caffey scored 22 points and drove for the winning layup with 16.8 seconds left as the 49ers edged the visiting Trojans to snap a nine-game losing streak.

Tyler Lamb scored 18 of his 20 points in the first half in his Long Beach State debut. Dan Jennings added 10 points and eight rebounds as the 49ers (2-9) won for the first time since Nov. 9.

Pe’Shon Howard scored 19 points to pace USC, which trailed by 16 early in the second half before charging back. Omar Oraby matched a season high with 17 points and had a season-best 10 rebounds while Nikola Jovanovic added 12 points for the Trojans (7-4).

USC took the lead for the first time since the opening minutes when Julian Jacobs stole the ball and drove for a layup and a 71-70 lead with 1:12 to play. Caffey navigated through traffic for the decisive basket and the Trojans came up empty on two 3-point attempts in the final six seconds.

Lamb made 7-of-10 shots in the first half and the 49ers shot 53.8 percent from the floor en route to a 50-36 halftime edge. USC trailed by 13 with under 12 minutes to play and charged back to trail 70-69 on Oraby’s three-point play with 1:40 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Lamb had three of Long Beach State’s nine steals in his first game since becoming eligible as a midsemester transfer from UCLA. … USC leading scorer Byron Wesley had just two points on 1-of-6 shooting and was held out for the first 11-plus minutes due to what was termed “coaches’ decision.” … Both teams were a porous 5-of-21 from 3-point range.
