Georgetown 85, Elon 76: Markel Starks scored 21 points as the host Hoyas overcame a 3-point barrage in the first half to edge the Phoenix.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera poured in 19 points and Joshua Smith chipped in 11 of his 18 points in the second half for Georgetown (7-2), which will play at No. 19 Kansas on Saturday. The Hoyas won the first meeting between the schools in 10 years and improved to 10-1 all-time against teams from the Southern Conference.

Tanner Samson and Lucas Troutman tallied 18 points apiece for Elon (5-6), which shot 13-for-31 beyond the arc. Sebastian Koch was one of three players to knock down at least three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.

Four different Phoenix players hit two 3-pointers in the first half as Elon shot 8-for-19 beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes and took a 40-39 lead at intermission. Smith’s layup triggered a 6-0 spurt to open the second half and Starks drained three consecutive 3-pointers to give the Hoyas a 56-48 advantage with under 14 minutes remaining.

Georgetown led by as much as 11 on a layup by Nate Lubick with 1 1/2 minutes left before the Phoenix scored seven straight points in about 40 seconds to close the gap to 78-74 following a three-point play by Koch. The Hoyas ended the threat with three free throws from Jabril Trawick and Smith-Rivera to preserve the victory.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Georgetown has won 49 straight at home against non-conference foes. … The Phoenix have hit at least 10 3-pointers seven times this season. … Elon made as many 3-pointers than the Hoyas had allowed over their last three games combined.
