Jarell Eddie scored a career-high 34 points on 13-of-18 shooting as the Hokies ran away from the visiting Eagles.

Eddie matched his career high with six 3-pointers and added seven rebounds for Virginia Tech (6-3), which won its third straight. C.J. Barksdale chipped in 13 points and Devin Wilson collected 11 and eight assists for the Hokies.

Keon Johnson scored 15 points as Winthrop (5-2) had its three-game wining streak come to an end. Joab Jerome added 13 points while leading scorer Andre Smith was held to nine and struggled to 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.

The Eagles took a 19-16 lead midway through the first half before Eddie took over, burying three 3-pointers and turning one into a four-point play to put Virginia Tech back on top. Eddie ended up scoring 14 straight points in that stretch and had 20 in the first half en route to a 42-33 lead at the break.

The Eagles squeezed to within 50-49 on Josh Davenport’s 3-pointer with 12:49 left in the game but went over four minutes without a point. Eddie rattled home another 3-pointer while being fouled and hit the free throw for his second four-point play and a 67-56 lead with 5:35 to play as the Hokies put it away.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia Tech G Adam Smith sat out with a calf strain. … The Hokies shot 60.4 percent from the field and dominated the glass 37-22. … Andre Smith came into the contest shooting 52.6 percent from 3-point range.
