Alabama-Birmingham 63, No. 16 North Carolina 59: Chad Frazier scored 25 points and the host Blazers dominated the backboards to upset the Tar Heels.

Fahro Alihodzic pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds for Alabama-Birmingham (6-2), which gave head coach Jerod Haase a victory over his mentor, North Carolina head coach Roy Williams. Frazier scored 18 points in the first half, and the Blazers, the nation’s fourth-leading rebounding team, outrebounded North Carolina 52-37.

J.P. Tokoto scored a career-high 16 points and Marcus Paige added 13 points for North Carolina (4-2), which trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half. The Tar Heels finished 1-for-12 from 3-point range and 4-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Alabama-Birmingham led 39-25 two minutes into the second half, but the Tar Heels whittled the deficit to 57-54 on Brice Johnson’s tip-in with 1:57 to play. Frazier hit a free throw to push the lead to four, but Paige converted a three-point play on the other end to bring North Carolina within 58-57 with 43 seconds left.

Frazier nailed two free throws to make it 60-57 with 36 seconds to go. Paige missed two 3-pointers in the final 25 seconds, and Jordan Swing sealed the upset with two free throws with six seconds remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Frazier was 12-for-14 from the free-throw line as the Blazers finished 22-for-28. … Alabama-Birmingham led 37-25 at halftime before getting outscored by eight in the second half. … The Tar Heels finished with 10 blocked shots, led by four by James Michael McAdoo.
