Central Florida 63, Miami (Fla.) 58: Calvin Newell scored a team-high 19 points as the visiting Knights took a double-digit lead in the second half and held on to edge the Hurricanes.

Kasey Wilson added 16 points, including a big dunk with 22 seconds left that sealed it for Central Florida (3-1), which suffered its only loss to Florida State. Isaiah Sykes chipped in with 11 points and Tristan Spurlock had 10 for the Knights.

Garrius Adams led the way with 20 points for Miami (3-2), which saw its three-game winning streak end and lost for the second time at home. Freshman Davon Reed added a season-best 17 points and Rion Brown recorded 11 for the Hurricanes.

Miami held a one-point lead midway through the first half before Newell’s 3-pointer ignited a run that carried the Knights to a 28-21 lead at intermission. Newell led all scorers with nine points in the opening half and Central Florida held the Hurricanes to 1-of-10 from 3-point range.

The Hurricanes pulled within 42-39 after an Adams’ three-point play a little over seven minutes into the second half, but the Knights responded with 10 of the next 14 points. Miami battled back within 59-58 after four straight points by Brown with just under a minute left, but the Hurricanes did not score again.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Sykes played his 100th game in a Central Florida uniform and has 1,817 career points. … Miami F James Kelly, who averaged 15 points over the previous three games for Miami, was held to two by the Knights. … It was the second victory in nine tries for Central Florida in the series against Miami.
