Virginia Tech 105, Virginia Military Institute 92: Jarell Eddie hit five 3-pointers and the host Hokies built a 20-point lead before holding on to defeat the Keydets.

Eddie finished with 21 points, Ben Emelogu added 19 points and freshman Trevor Thompson blocked five shots for Virginia Tech (3-1), which faces top-ranked Michigan State on Friday. The Hokies finished 11-for-17 from 3-point range and outrebounded VMI (3-2) 52-31.

Rodney Glasgow and QJ Peterson led the Keydets with 22 points each. D.J. Covington added 20 points before fouling out with 5:49 remaining.

The Hokies led 64-45 on Eddie’s fifth 3-pointer with 14:18 to go and held a 96-82 advantage with 2:34 remaining. VMI rallied to within 98-92 on two Peterson free throws with 1:18 to play but could get no closer.

The Keydets were within 36-32 with 3:09 remaining in the first half, but were outscored 12-1 during the next four minutes. Emelogu scored five points during the run, and a pair of free throws from Marshall Wood made it 48-33 Virginia Tech with 19:09 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia Tech F C.J. Barksdale scored 16 points in his first game of the season after serving a three-game suspension for a violation of team rules. … Covington blocked three shots to move into a second-place tie with Eric Mann on VMI’s all-time blocks list (184). … The Hokies hit 22-of-26 free throws while the Keydets shot 16-for-23.
