Belmont 83, No. 11 North Carolina 80: J.J. Mann scored a game-high 28 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the visiting Bruins to an upset over the Tar Heels in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament.

Mann grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and also dished out three assists for Belmont (3-1), which knocked down 15 3-pointers. Drew Windler added 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

James Michael McAdoo led the offense with 27 points for the Tar Heels (2-1), who struggled mightily from the free-throw line, shooting 22-of-48. Marcus Paige added 17 points for North Carolina, which failed to hold a late lead.

Belmont took a 41-34 lead into halftime and extended its lead to 58-48 with 13:13 left to play. A 14-2 run, led by Paige and McAdoo with five apiece, pushed the Tar Heels to their first lead since late in the first half, 62-60 with 8:26 remaining.

As North Carolina tried to extend its lead, the Bruins pushed back, with three key 3-pointers from Mann in the final 1:03. Mann gave Belmont the lead at 81-80 with 14 seconds left and after J.P. Tokoto's jumper wouldn't go for the Tar Heels on the ensuing possession, Caleb Chowbay's layup sealed the upset.

GAME NOTEBOOK: North Carolina had started 3-0 in each of the previous two seasons. ... The 26 misses at the free-throw line for the Tar Heels equaled a school record set against Clemson in 1956. ... North Carolina played its third straight game without Gs P.J. Hairston and Leslie McDonald, as the NCAA evaluates the eligibility of each player.
