Syracuse 66, California 60: C.J. Fair scored 16 points as the Orange advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year, holding off the Golden Bears in an NCAA Tournament third-round game in San Jose, Calif.

James Southerland added 14 points and nine rebounds and Michael Carter-Williams chipped in 12 for No. 4 Syracuse (28-9), which will face either Indiana or Temple in the regional semifinals.

California (21-12), the No. 12 seed, couldn't get its offense going against the Orange, with leading scorer Allen Crabbe finishing with eight points on 3-of-10 shooting. Richard Solomon led the way for the Golden Bears with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Tyrone Wallace added 12 points.

The Orange started out hot, jumping ahead 11-2 after the first 6:20 of the contest. The Bears responded with a 7-0 run to pull within two, but Syracuse responded by opening up a 12-p oint advantage before settling for an eight-point halftime lead.

California tried to rally late in the game, helped by Syracuse's 26-of-41 shooting from the free-throw line, but turnovers derailed any comeback hopes. After California pulled within seven and got a turnover with 1:49 to play, Crabbe stepped on the sideline, killing the Bears' last bit of momentum.

GAME NOTEBOOK: California G Justin Cobbs entered the game with a 15.4 ppg average, but finished with five points on 2-of-9 shooting. … The Orange won the rebound battle, 35-33, grabbing 13 offensive boards in the process. … Syracuse G Brandon Triche shot 1-of-8 and scored eight points, five below his average.
