Stanford 58, Stephen F. Austin 57: Dwight Powell had 12 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots as the host Cardinal survived to advance to the second round of the NIT tournament.

Powell recorded his 10th double-double of the season for fourth-seeded Stanford, which will play top-seeded Alabama in the second round. Aaron Bright contributed 11 points for the Cardinal (19-14), the defending tournament champion.

Taylor Smith had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded Lumberjacks, who scored the game’s final five points but missed three field goals in the last two minutes that would have given them the lead. Antonio Bostic added 15 points, Hal Bateman scored 12 and Desmond Haymon finished with 10 for Stephen F. Austin (27-6).

Haymon’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 58-57 with 2:18 remaining but he missed the final three shots, the last a pull-up jumper at the free throw line with three seconds left. Stanford did not score in the final 5:44.

Stanford took nearly four minutes to convert its first field goal, but a 12-0 run that began with 8:39 left in the first half put the Cardinal in front 26-20. The Lumberjacks ended the half by scoring nine of the final 12 points to move back ahead 32-31.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanford improved to 3-5 in games decided by three points or less this season. … Bostic appeared to suffer a right shoulder injury with about five minutes remaining and the Lumberjacks trailing by three. He did not return. … Stephen F. Austin, which came in leading all of Division I in scoring defense at 51 points, held its 63rd consecutive opponent to fewer than 70 points.
