Vander Blue scored seven points in the final 1:33 - including the game-winning layup with one second left - as the third-seeded Golden Eagles narrowly avoided an upset in an NCAA Tournament second-round game in Lexington, Ky.

Blue finished with 16 points to lead Marquette (24-8), which ended on a 13-5 run to advance to play No. 6 Butler on Saturday. Jamil Wilson finished with 14 points and made a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to bring the Golden Eagles within 58-57.

Jake Cohen scored a game-high 20 points for 14th-seeded Davidson (26-8), which entered the game with a nation-leading 17-game winning streak. De’Mon Brooks, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, threw away a pass with seven seconds left to set up Blue’s game winner.

After two Cohen 3-pointers gave Davidson a 12-2 lead 6:25 into regulation, Davante Gardner scored five points in an 11-3 Marquette response and the Golden Eagles ultimately pulled within 25-23 at halftime. Back-to-back Cohen jumpers ended a 9-1 Wildcats' spurt to give them a 49-40 edge with 6:27 to go before two Wilson jumpers cut Marquette’s deficit to 49-46 3:51 later.

A JP Kuhlman free throw pushed the Davidson cushion to 54-48 with 1:10 left, but Wilson and Blue hit 3-pointers to make it 56-54 with 27 seconds remaining. After Nik Cochran went 2-for-2 at the foul line, Wilson hit another deep ball and Blue drove down the left side of the lane for the go-ahead score.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Marquette C Chris Otule registered 11 points and 11 rebounds. ... Davidson, which entered the game as the best free-throwing shooting team in the country, went 14-for-22 at the stripe. ...The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Wildcats 41-29.
