No. 16 Saint Louis 72, Charlotte 55: Dwayne Evans collected a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds to lead the top-seeded Billikens past the ninth-seeded 49ers in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Evans was 8-for-9 shooting and 9-for-9 from the foul line for Saint Louis (25-6), which will play No. 5 seed Butler in Saturday’s semifinals. Cody Ellis came off the bench to score 13 points and Mike McCall Jr. added nine for the Billikens, who finished 13-3 in the conference, won their first outright regular-season title since 1957 and earned a bye into the quarterfinals.

Chris Braswell had 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench to lead Charlotte (21-11), which earned a controversial 68-63 win over No. 8 seed Richmond in Thursday’s first round. Pierria Henry chipped in seven points and seven rebounds for the 49ers, who finished tied for eighth in the conference with an 8-8 record.

Charlotte cut Saint Louis’ lead to 19-16 on Braswell’s 3-pointer but the Billikens went on a 13-0 run, powered by seven points from McCall, and took a 39-28 advantage into halftime. The 49ers pulled as close as seven points in the second half on Braswell’s 3-pointer with 13:03 left, but the Billikens went on a 9-0 run to pull away.

Saint Louis was 25-for-31 from the foul line, while Charlotte was 12-for-22. The Billikens, who have won 13 of their last 14 games, beat the 49ers 76-58 at Saint Louis on Feb. 16.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Charlotte committed 20 turnovers to Saint Louis’ 10. … The Billikens scored 16 points off the 49ers’ 13 first-half turnovers. … Saint Louis senior G Kwamain Mitchell (four) and Ellis (three) accounted for seven of the Billikens’ 11 steals.
