Oklahoma 77, West Virginia 70: Amath M’Baye scored a season-high 19 points as the Sooners held off the Mountaineers in the third-place game of the Old Spice Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Freshman Je’lon Hornbeak capped a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer that gave Oklahoma a 69-62 lead and West Virginia never got closer than five the rest of the way. Hornbeak finished with a career-high 14 points for the Sooners (4-1).

Juwan Staten scored 15 points to lead West Virginia (1-3), which shot 36.2 percent from the field. Gary Browne and Deniz Kilicli added 13 points each for the Mountaineers. All of Kilicli’s points came in the second half.

Oklahoma led by as many as 12 midway through the first half before West Virginia scored seven of the last nine points to close within 42-37 at halftime. M’Baye led all scorers with 10 points as OU shot 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

The Sooners led by as many as seven early in the second half, but West Virginia battled back to tie it 62-62 with 6:32 left. Buddy Hield’s basket with 5:23 remaining gave Oklahoma the lead for good.

GAME NOTEBOOK: This was the second time in Big 12 history that two league squads met in a regular-season non-conference game. Texas met Nebraska in the first year of league play in 1996. … West Virginia, which moved from the Big East to the Big 12 this season, will host the Sooners Jan. 5 and travels to Norman on March 6. … West Virginia’s Aaric Murray had eight points and nine rebounds despite foul trouble that limited him to 22 minutes.
