No. 12 Creighton 87, Arizona State 73: Doug McDermott scored 29 points and the Bluejays held off the Sun Devils to capture the championship game at the Las Vegas Invitational.

McDermott, a 6-8 junior forward and the nation's only returning consensus first-team All-American, scored 19 points in the first half as Creighton (6-0) built a nine-point lead. Ethan Wragge was the only other player for the Bluejays to score in double figures, finishing with 13.

Jahii Carson, a freshman point guard for Arizona State (4-1), scored a season-high 30 points. He also had seven assists and four steals. Carrick Felix, coming off a career-high 24 points in the semifinals against Arkansas, scored 17.

Creighton surged to a 27-9 lead but Arizona State came back with 11-0 run. The Sun Devils cut the deficit to six on several possessions - the final time on two free throws by Evan Gordon with 2:47 remaining in the game, but Wragge nailed a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 run.

Arizona State had the height advantage in the middle with 7-2 junior center Jordan Bachynski, but he only collected two rebounds and did not block a shot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona State was attempting to start 5-0 for the first time since 1985. … Carson is only the fourth freshman for Arizona State to score at least 30 points in a game. Carson came into the game averaging 9.5 free throw attempts per game, eighth in the nation and tops among freshman. He finished 10-for-11 from the line. … Creighton G Grant Gibbs had committed only four turnovers in 133 minutes coming into the game, but committed three against the Sun Devils.
