Minnesota 66, Stanford 63: Andre Hollins hit three free throws with less than a second remaining as the Golden Gophers held on to defeat the Cardinal in the fifth-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Trevor Mbakwe led the way off the bench for Minnesota (6-1) with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Rodney Williams scored 12.

After Dwight Powell knotted the game at 63 with 14 seconds remaining for Stanford (4-3), the Gophers lucked out when Hollins retrieved a loose ball that was nearly stolen by Powell near midcourt and launched a shot, drawing a foul on Chasson Randle right before the buzzer. After officials reviewed the play to see if the foul occurred before time expired, Hollins calmly sank all three of his free-throw attempts and Minnesota knocked away a long desperation pass to end the game.

Powell scored nine straight points to give the Cardinal a short-lived 50-49 advantage, but Mbawke answered with his team’s next eight points during a critical stretch that left the Gophers ahead 62-61. Hollins hit 1-of-2 from the foul line and Powell sank two free throws on the next possession, setting the stage for the thrilling finish.

Powell rebounded from a poor game on Friday to score a career-high 22 points.

GAME NOTEBOOK: This game was the first between the schools since Stanford crushed Minnesota 75-51 in the 2012 NIT Championship. … Following his career-high 41-point performance in Friday’s win over Memphis, Hollins went 1-of-8 from the field and scored just eight points, with four coming over the final 26 seconds. … Mbakwe recorded his 24th career double-double and first since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on Nov. 27, 2011.
