Marquette 72, Southern California 64: Jamil Wilson scored a career-high 19 points as the Golden Eagles captured the fifth-place game at the Maui Invitational.

Wilson, a 6-7 junior forward who played his freshman season at Oregon before transferring to Marquette, made 7 of 9 field-goal attempts, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Davante Gardner scored 12 points for the Golden Eagles (4-1), putting him in double digits every game this season.

J.T. Terrell scored 21 points for the Trojans (3-2), converting 5 of 9 attempts from beyond the arc. Byron Wesley scored 12 points and Eric Wise had 11 points and nine rebounds for USC.

Vander Blue, a 6-4 junior guard for the Golden Eagles who averaged 19.5 points in the first two games of the tournament, was held to six points before he was carried off the floor with 2:57 remaining after slipping awkwardly in the lane and suffering an apparent left knee injury.

Marquette ended the first half on a 12-5 run to go ahead 39-27. The Trojans cut the deficit to one on a 3-pointer by Terrell with 14:06 left, but the Golden Eagles answered with a 9-0 run to put the game away.

GAME NOTEBOOK: USC senior point guard Jio Fontan, the team’s second-leading scorer in 2010-11 before sitting out last season with a knee injury, shot 1-for-9 from the floor and is just 9 for 42 (21.4 percent) on the season. … USC forward Dewayne Dedmon limped off the floor with 39 seconds left after colliding with Wilson under the Marquette basket. Dedmon, a 7-0 senior, missed the final 11 games last season with a knee injury. … USC coach Kevin O’Neill coached Marquette from 1989-94.
