Keith Appling scored 19 points and Gary Harris added 11 as the host Spartans snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory that will boost their position in the scramble for the top seeds in the Big Ten tournament.

Adreian Payne contributed nine points and 11 rebounds for Michigan State (23-7, 12-5 Big Ten), which has won five straight meetings with Wisconsin and 33 of its last 35 games at the Breslin Center. The Spartans are one game behind Indiana and still have an outside shot at a share of the conference title.

Ben Brust scored 10 points and Ryan Evans added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Badgers (20-10, 11-6), who have lost two straight and close the regular season at Penn State needing a win to have a chance at one of the top four seeds in the conference tournament.

Wisconsin led for less than a minute in the entire game. The Badgers took a 12-10 advantage on a Mike Bruesewitz 3-pointer with 9:11 left in the first half but didn't score again for nearly six minutes as Michigan State opened an eight-point lead.

Travis Trice's 3-pointer just before halftime gave the Spartans a 25-18 advantage at the break, and Michigan State held Wisconsin scoreless for more than seven minutes early in the second half while extending the lead to 21 with a 16-0 run.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The home team has won 14 of the past 16 meetings played on its campus. … Wisconsin was 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) from 3-point range, its worst performance of the season. The Badgers went 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from long range in a win against Penn State on Jan. 3. … Badgers freshman F Sam Dekker was limited to nine points, snapping a string of six straight games scoring in double figures.
