Virginia 73, No. 3 Duke 68: Joe Harris scored a career-high 36 points and the host Cavaliers snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Blue Devils in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Akil Mitchell had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Virginia (20-8, 10-5 ACC) never trailed while recording its 16th consecutive home victory and beating a Top 5 team for the first time since also downing Duke exactly 11 years ago.

Seth Curry scored 28 points and Quinn Cook added 22 for Duke (24-4, 11-4), which is just 4-4 on the road this season.

Virginia set the tone for the upset by scoring the first seven points and taking an 11-2 lead just five-plus minutes into the contest. The Blue Devils used a 10-2 run to pull within 22-21 on Curry’s 3-pointer with 4:27 left in the half but were never able to take the lead.

The Cavaliers led 28-23 at the break and began pulling away with a 10-0 surge to take a 12-point lead with 15:10 left. The lead reached 55-39 and was still 13 with 1:28 remaining before Duke made a late run to lose by five.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Harris is the first player to score 30 or more against Duke since Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum scored 30 in the 15th-seeded Mountain Hawks’ upset of second-seeded Duke in last season’s NCAA Tournament. … The Cavaliers had a 36-25 rebounding edge and Duke star Mason Plumlee was a relative non-factor with 10 points and seven rebounds. … Virginia is 17-1 at home with the lone blemish being a loss to Delaware on Nov. 13.
