No. 8 Syracuse 84, Providence 59: Michael Carter-Williams recorded 15 points and 12 assists as the hot-shooting Orange pulled away in the first half to snap the visiting Friars’ four-game winning streak.

C.J. Fair added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Syracuse (22-4, 10-3 Big East), which finished the opening half with a 31-4 run. James Southerland chipped in with 20 points and Brandon Triche had 14 for the Orange, who moved into a three-way tie for the top spot in the Big East with Marquette and Georgetown.

Vincent Council had 15 points for Providence (14-12, 6-8) and dished out seven assists to pass Syracuse’s Sherman Douglas (1985-89) as the all-time leader in Big East games with 431. LaDontae Henton added 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Friars.

Southerland had seven of his 14 first-half points during a 13-0 run that gave Syracuse control en route to a 43-16 lead at intermission. The Orange shot 63 percent from the field and held Providence to 0-of-6 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes.

Syracuse shot 56.6 percent from the field overall and extended the nation’s longest active home streak in Division I to 38 games, including 16 this season. The Orange held Big East leading scorer Bryce Cotton to 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-9 from behind the arc.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Southerland was 7-of-8 from the field and made all three of his 3-point attempts for Syracuse. … Providence has not won at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome since 1999 and has lost seven straight overall to the Orange, including two this season. … Syracuse hosts Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.
