Iowa 74, Penn State 72: Roy Devyn Marble scored 22 points, including three free throws in the final 21 seconds, as the visiting Hawkeyes held on to win the Big Ten game.

Mike Gesell scored 10 of his 13 points in the first half and Melsahn Basabe chipped in 11 points and four blocked shots for Iowa (16-9, 5-7 Big Ten).

D.J. Newbill scored 16 of his 26 points in the opening half for Penn State (8-16, 0-12). Sasa Borovnjak matched his season high with 14 points and Jermaine Marshall also scored 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Nittany Lions.

The Hawkeyes used an 11-0 run to take a 61-49 lead with 10:36 remaining in the game but the Nittany Lions didn’t back down. Borovnjak’s three-point play cut the deficit to 70-67 with 1:55 left and a free throw by Marshall pulled Penn State within two with 1:13 remaining.

But the Nittany Lions missed two opportunities to tie or take the lead and Marble made three free throws and Basabe converted one in the final minute to maintain the advantage.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Nittany Lions used a 16-0 run to take a 23-17 lead midway through the first half but Iowa clawed back to lead 38-34 at the break. ... Penn State entered the game last in the Big Ten in 3-point shooting at 26.7 percent but made 8 of 17 from beyond the arc. … Iowa shot 44.4 percent from the floor, improving to 15-3 this season when shooting at least 40 percent.
