Illinois 74, No. 1 Indiana 72: Tyler Griffey’s layup at the buzzer off an inbounds pass from Brandon Paul gave the host Fighting Illini the upset of the Hoosiers and a win over a top-ranked team for the third time in school history.

D.J. Richardson scored 23 points – including eight straight points to forge a tie at 70. Paul tallied 21 points and Griffey scored 14 as Illinois (16-8, 3-7 Big Ten) finished the game with a 13-2 run to stun the Hoosiers.

Cody Zeller had 14 points and nine rebounds, Will Sheehey scored 13 points and Christian Watford added 12 points for the Hoosiers (20-3, 8-2), who let a 14-point lead with under 13 minutes left slip away.

Indiana led 41-29 at halftime and was still up 69-59 when Watford hit two free throws with 4:23 to play. But Richardson drained two 3-pointers and a 17-footer to tie the contest with 1:16 remaining.

Victor Oladipo’s driving layup put the Hoosiers back ahead with 52 seconds left and Paul hit two free throws with 37.2 seconds remaining. Oladipo swatted away Richardson’s layup with 0.9 seconds left, setting the stage for Griffey to get wide open on the inbounds play to score the winning points as time expired.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Fighting Illini’s other wins over No. 1 teams were in 1979 against Magic Johnson-led Michigan State and 2004 against Chris Paul-led Wake Forest. … Indiana was 13-of-14 from the free-throw line and the Illini were 13-of-15. … Illinois C Nnanna Egwu fouled out for the fourth time in the last six games.
