North Carolina 72, Virginia Tech 60 (OT): James Michael McAdoo scored 22 points and Marcus Paige added eight of his 19 in overtime as the Tar Heels survived a scare from the visiting Hokies.

Reggie Bullock struggled to 11 points on 3-of-13 shooting for North Carolina (15-6, 5-3 ACC), which overcame 37.5 percent shooting to pick up its fifth win in the last six games.

Erick Green, the nation’s leading scorer, was held to 16 points on 7-of-21 shooting and Jarell Eddie added 15 as Virginia Tech (11-10, 2-6) lost its fourth straight.

McAdoo gave the Tar Heels the edge with a short jumper early in the extra period and Paige made it stand up, giving North Carolina its biggest lead of the game up to that point with a 3-pointer and adding a jumper off a turnover.

The Hokies led 42-35 after Marshall Wood’s jumper with 15:23 left but made only one field goal over the next 8:05 as the Tar Heels crept back into the game and grabbed a 47-45 lead. There were five ties and four lead changes in the final 7:18 of regulation, including Joey van Zegeren’s free throws for Virginia Tech with 46 seconds left that forced overtime.

GAME NOTEBOOK: North Carolina G P.J. Hairston sat out after suffering a concussion in a win over Boston College on Tuesday. … Green came in averaging 25.5 points on 49.8 percent shooting. … The Tar Heels get Wake Forest at home on Tuesday before beginning the most difficult stretch of their schedule with trips to Miami and Duke.
