Virginia 58, No. 19 North Carolina State 55
: Joe Harris matched a season high with 22 points as the Cavaliers handed the Wolfpack their third consecutive conference road loss.

Akil Mitchell added 14 points and 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season and Mike Tobey tallied 13 points and seven boards for Virginia (15-5, 5-2 ACC).

C.J. Leslie finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds off the bench and Richard Howell contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for North Carolina State (16-5, 5-3), which played the final 30-plus minutes without point guard Lorenzo Brown due to injury.

The Wolfpack led by as many as 11 points late in the first half, but the Cavaliers scored 22 of the next 33 points spanning both halves to knot the game at 40. North Carolina State quickly re-established a five-point lead at 47-42 on a 3-pointer by Scott Wood, but Tobey’s layup tied it at 49 with 6:03 left.

Harris scored the next five points for Virginia, but another 3-pointer from Wood tied the game again at 54 with 4:25 remaining. However, Mitchell hit a jumper on the next possession and the Cavaliers held North Carolina State to a free throw over the final four minutes, surviving a potential game-tying 3-point attempt from Wood with five seconds left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Brown suffered an ankle injury on a drive to the basket with 10:39 left in the first half. … Virginia held its 17th opponent – including all seven conference foes – to less than 60 points and has yet to allow more than 64 points in any game. … Howell has posted double-figure rebound totals in each of the last nine games – the longest streak for a Wolfpack player since Tommy Burleson had 10 straight in 1972-73. He also became only the sixth player in school history with 1,000 career points and 900 career rebounds.
