Northwestern 55, No. 14 Minnesota 48: Jared Swopshire recorded 16 points and eight rebounds as the Wildcats came from behind in the second half to beat the visiting Golden Gophers.

Swopshire had the final three points in an 18-4 run as Northwestern (12-8, 3-4 Big Ten) took a 50-41 lead with 4:36 left and held off a rally by the Gophers. Reggie Hearn scored 13 points and Tre Demps added 10 for the Wildcats, who avenged a 69-51 defeat at Minnesota on Jan. 6.

Trevor Mbakwe earned his 30th career double-double and seventh of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds for Minnesota (15-4, 3-3), which dropped its third straight game. The Golden Gophers shot 7-for-17 from the free-throw line and leading scorer Andre Hollins had only six points on 2-for-9 shooting from the field.

Mbakwe had seven points and eight rebounds in the first half as Minnesota led by as many as seven. Swopshire scored 10 points as Northwestern, which took 13 less shots in the opening 20 minutes, shaved the deficit to 27-24 at intermission.

Hearn converted a layup on a fast break and followed with a three-point play to tie the score at 37. Alex Marcotullio’s 3-pointer gave the Wildcats a 40-39 lead, Demps added another from behind the arc and they were on their way.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota’s Austin Hollins, who had 19 points in the win Jan. 6, fouled out with 11:49 left after picking up two quick ones. He finished with six points. … Northwestern won its first home game in four tries in Big Ten play. … Minnesota has outrebounded 16 of 19 opponents.
