St. John's 72. Rutgers 60: JaKarr Sampson scored 21 points and the visiting Red Storm posted their third straight victory.

D'Angelo Harrison added 20 points for St. John's (12-7, 4-3 Big East), which outscored Rutgers 43-32 in the second half and overcame a 21-of-35 showing from the free throw line. Sampson and Harrison combined for 28 points in the second half and shot a combined 14-of-30 from the field.

Myles Mack scored 17 for the Scarlet Knights (12-6, 3-4), who shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63) and committed 17 turnovers, leading to 20 points. Mike Poole added 11 points for Rutgers, which received just five points from leading scorer Eli Carter, who was 1-of-14 from the field.

Rutgers scored the first six points and took a 20-12 lead on Wally Judge's dunk with 7:51 remaining. St. John's outscored the Scarlet Knights 17-8 the rest of the half and scored the final eight points for a 29-28 halftime edge.

The Red Storm extended the run to 17-0 on a mid-range jumper by Harrison with 15:02 remaining for a 38-28 advantage. Rutgers finally ended a scoring drought of nearly nine minutes on a basket by Austin Johnson with 13:59 remaining and climbed to within 38-35 on a 3-pointer by Jerome Seagears on its next possession but Sampson and Harrison combined on 19 of the next 21 points as St. John's expanded the lead to 59-48 with 4 1/2 minutes remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Rutgers came into the game leading the Big East in free throw shooting at 74.5 percent but shot 9-of-17. ... Carter is 4-of-28 from the field in two games against St. John's this season. ... Sampson has shot 36-for-68 from the field in his four 20-point games this season.
