No. 23 UNLV 82, No. 14 San Diego State 75: Anthony Marshall recorded season highs of 20 points and eight rebounds as the visiting Rebels knocked off the preseason favorites in the Mountain West Conference.

Bryce Dejean-Jones contributed 14 points and Khem Birch had 12, including two key putbacks in the final 2:31, for the Rebels (15-3, 2-1 MWC).

Jamaal Franklin had 27 points and seven rebounds for the Aztecs (14-3, 2-1), who fell to 8-1 at home this season. Winston Shepard had a breakout game for San Diego State as the 6-8 freshman forward scored a season-high 18 points, finishing 10-for-12 from the free throw line.

The Rebels shot 57.6 percent from the floor in the first half and took a 48-42 lead into the locker room. Marshall helped out by scoring nine first-half points, nearly matching his season average (9.1).

The Rebels pushed the lead to 10 with 16:47 remaining, but San Diego State went on a 12-0 run and went ahead 63-60 on Shepard’s jumper with 9:53 left. The teams traded leads until UNLV scored second-chance points on three consecutive possessions to go ahead 80-75 with 25 seconds left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: UNLV’s leading scorer, 6-8 freshman forward Anthony Bennett, had a season-low nine points. He watched the final minutes from the bench, along with last season’s leading scorer, Mike Moser. … The Rebels entered the game third in the nation in assists (18.4) and eighth in rebounding (42.5). They finished with 15 assists and 43 rebounds. … The Aztecs came in shooting 35.9 from 3-point range this season. They were 3-for-19 (15.8).
