Freshman Tyrone Wallace scored a career-high 16 points and Allen Crabbe added 14 as the Bears pulled away late against the visiting Cougars.

Royce Woolridge hit a 3-pointer to cut the Bears’ lead to 52-49 with 5:51 left, but California (10-6, 2-2 Pac-12) closed the game on a 15-5 run to keep the Cougars winless in conference play.

Brock Motum paced Washington State (9-7, 0-3) with 16 points, and Mike Ladd recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Woolridge finished with 12 points.

In a game featuring the top two scorers in the Pac-12, Crabbe and Motum both underperformed. Crabbe entered the game averaging 20.5 points, but was just 3-of-7 from the field. Motum, averaging 20 points, was 5-of-14 shooting, including 2-of-7 from 3-point range.

The contest was ultimately decided at the free-throw line, where California shot 77.8 percent (28-of-36) compared to 47.6 percent (10-of-21) for Washington State. The Bears made 17 of their final 20 free throws to secure the victory.

GAME NOTEBOOK: California F Jeff Powers scored five points in his first start of the season. G Justin Cobbs scored all 10 of his points in the second half. … Washington State has not won a game at California since Feb. 28, 2008. … Both teams struggled from 3-point range, with California making three of its 11 shots (27.3 percent) and Washington State shooting 22.2 percent (4-of-18).
