North Carolina 77, Florida State 72:
P.J. Hairston came off the bench to score a career-high 23 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Tar Heels past the host Seminoles and give North Carolina its first ACC victory.

James Michael McAdoo had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Reggie Bullock added 12 points and eight rebounds to help North Carolina (11-5, 1-2) snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 2-3 on the road. The Tar Heels avenged last season’s 90-57 loss to Florida State in Tallahassee, which was the worst of coach Roy Williams’ tenure at North Carolina.

Florida State (10-6, 2-1 ACC), the defending ACC champion, had its two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 4-5 at home. Okaro White had 15 points and six rebounds, both team highs, to lead the Seminoles. Terry Whisnant II scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Terrance Shannon added 12 points off the bench.

North Carolina jumped out to a 6-0 lead and maintained it until Florida State’s Montay Brandon made a 3-pointer to put the Seminoles up 21-19 with 6:12 left in the first half. The Tar Heels regained the lead 27-26 on McAdoo’s dunk off a nifty no-look pass by Marcus Paige. North Carolina led 33-31 at halftime.

In the second half, the game was tied six times and there were 11 lead changes. North Carolina went ahead to stay 73-72 on Jackson Simmons’ layup with 3:14 to play. Florida State’s Michael Snaer missed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left that would have tied the game at 75.

GAME NOTEBOOK: North Carolina outrebounded Florida State 34-18. … The Tar Heels’ victory came almost a year to the day (Jan. 14) after suffering the 33-point loss to the Seminoles. … North Carolina junior guard Leslie McDonald (8.4 points) did not play for the second straight game after tweaking his right knee, which he had surgery on to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament that sidelined him for all of the 2011-12 season.
