No. 8 Gonzaga 83, Saint Mary’s 78: Kelly Olynyk scored 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Bulldogs withstood a furious second-half comeback by the visiting Gaels.

Gonzaga (16-1, 3-0 WCC) led 46-28 at halftime before Saint Mary’s (12-4, 1-1) rallied to cut the lead to 79-78 with 15 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs answered with four straight free throws to secure their seventh straight win.

Kevin Pangos had 22 points and Elias Harris added 13 for Gonzaga, which shot 54.2 percent from the field and improved to 56-2 in conference home games at the McCarthey Center.

Stephen Holt led the Gaels’ comeback and tied his career high with 23 points, including three 3-pointers. Beau Levesque added 14 points while star point guard Matthew Dellavedova was held to 14 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

Olynyk, the reigning West Coast Conference player of the week, dominated the first half with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting. After Levesque hit a 3-pointer to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 67-64 with 6:15 left, the 7-foot Olynyk scored seven of Gonzaga’s next 10 points.
