St. John’s 53, No. 15 Cincinnati 52: D’Angelo Harrison scored 15 points, including the go-ahead basket with 28.2 seconds left, as the visiting Red Storm edged the Bearcats.

Cashmere Wright’s driving layup gave Cincinnati, which trailed by as many as 12 in the second half, a 52-51 lead with 53 seconds remaining. After Harrison’s basket, Titus Rubles missed a 15-footer for the Bearcats with five seconds left and St. John’s (9-5, 1-1 Big East) was able to hold on.

JaKarr Sampson led the way for the Red Storm with 16 points and eight rebounds. St. John’s finished with a 40-34 advantage on the boards against the Bearcats (13-2, 1-1), who were outrebounding teams by an average of 10 coming in.

Wright had 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Rubles scored 14 for Cincinnati. The Bearcats were 8-of-26 from 3-point range and the Red Storm made just one of their nine attempts, Harrison’s desperation heave for a 51-47 lead with 1:59 left.

Cincinnati led by as much as seven in the first half, getting 13 points from Wright - including three 3-pointers. The Red Storm battled back with 10 points from Sampson and some strong work on the backboards to take a 24-21 lead at intermission.

GAME NOTEBOOK: St. John’s guard Jamal Branch was poked in the eye at practice on Friday and did not play. … Cincinnati’s leading scorer Sean Kilpatrick (18.6) was held to seven points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field - 0-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. … St. John’s also won at Cincinnati 57-55 last January and has a 9-7 edge in the series.
