No. 18 Michigan State 84, Purdue 61: Gary Harris was 6-of-8 from 3-point range en route to a career-high 22 points and the host Spartans used a second-half surge to dispatch the Boilermakers.

Branden Dawson added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Denzel Valentine scored 11 for Michigan State (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten), which bounced back after falling to Minnesota in its conference opener.

Purdue (7-7, 1-1) held a 39-38 lead with 16:04 left in the game before the Spartans took over. Michigan State scored nine straight points at the free-throw line during an 11-0 run to take the lead and finally found its stroke from the field with 9:38 left, when Harris’ 3-pointer sparked a stretch of baskets on four straight possessions.

The Boilermakers had field goal droughts of 3:05 and 3:13 in the last 12 minutes of the second half, allowing the Spartans to push it all the way out to 71-48.

A.J. Hammons scored 20 points but leading scorer Terone Johnson was held to 11 on 5-of-19 shooting for Purdue, which shot 39.3 percent from the field.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan State's leading scorer Keith Appling scored only six points on 2-of-6 shooting but handed out eight assists while committing only one turnover. … The Boilermakers had beaten No. 11 Illinois in their Big Ten opener on Wednesday. They will continue a brutal stretch to open conference play by hosting No. 8 Ohio State on Tuesday. … The Spartans have taken four straight in the series.
