Jio Fontan made two free throws with 6.9 seconds left and the host Trojans rallied to beat the Cardinal in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

Dwight Powell missed a putback dunk to tie the game with three seconds left, giving USC (6-8, 1-0 Pac-12) just its second two-game winning streak of the season. Fontan led the Trojans with 15 points and Eric Wise added 14.

Andy Brown scored 15 points for Stanford (9-5, 0-1), which led by nine at halftime. Aaron Bright had 14 points and Josh Huestis recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 boards.

Brown was fouled on a jump shot that tied the game at 69-69 with 31 seconds left, but he missed the free throw and USC moved ahead when Fontan hit two free throws after being fouled by Chasson Randle with seven seconds left.

USC, which took their first lead at 53-51 on Aaron Fuller’s layup with 8:53 remaining, shot 50.9 percent from the field and dropped Stanford to 9-28 in Pac-12 road games dating to the 2008-09 season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Powell, who entered the game averaging 14.5 points and 7.2 rebounds, had just nine points on 5-of-15 shooting and six boards. … Stanford was 9-for-19 (47.4 percent) from 3-point range, while USC was 4-of-10 (40 percent). … Trojans C Dewayne Dedmon had 11 points and four rebounds in 17 minutes before fouling out with 3:15 to play.
