Miami-Florida 73, Hawaii 58: Julian Gamble stepped in for the injured Reggie Johnson and produced career highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Hurricanes in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.

Johnson, a 6-10 senior center who averages 12.6 points and 10.1 rebounds for Miami, injured his thumb during practice Friday and was unable to play. Gamble, a 6-10 senior, came through with the third double-double of his career and the first in two years. He grabbed eight offensive rebounds for the Hurricanes (8-1), who have won seven in a row.

Brandon Jawato started the second half in place of senior Hauns Brereton and the freshman guard scored 12 points to lead the Rainbows (5-4).

Durand Scott scored 16 of his season-high 20 points in the second half for Miami, who will meet No. 5 Arizona in a semifinal Sunday night.

Both sides traded leads throughout the first half before the Hurricanes eventually took a 22-21 advantage into the break. The Hurricanes scored 14 of the first 16 points in the second half to seize a double-digit lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Christian Standhardinger, a 6-8 junior forward for Hawaii and the team’s leading scorer coming in at 17 points, didn’t record his first points until midway through the second half and finished with seven, ending a streak of three consecutive double-doubles … Garrett Jefferson was in the starting lineup at point guard for Hawaii instead of Jace Tavita, who was ejected in the last game against Chaminade. Tavita came into the week 18th in the nation in assists at 6.3. Both players went scoreless. … Miami finished with six turnovers.
