No. 15 San Diego State 80, San Francisco 58: Chase Tapley registered a career-high 33 points as the Aztecs held off the Dons in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic at Honolulu for their 10th straight victory.

Tapley was 13-of-19 from the field and drained six of his 10 attempts from 3-point range. Jamaal Franklin, who missed the last game with a back injury, added 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists for San Diego State (10-1), which plays Indiana State in the semifinals on Sunday.

Cole Dickerson led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds for San Francisco (5-5), which has lost four straight. Cody Doolin added 11 points and De’End Parker 10 for the Dons.

After trailing by seven early, Tapley’s 15 points helped San Diego State push its lead as high as 10 in the first half. The Dons scored the final five though, including Doolin’s 3-pointer at the buzzer, to pull within 38-33 at the break.

The Dons crept within two twice in the second half, but could never tie it or go ahead. San Diego State received back-to-back 3-pointers from Tapley and James Rahon to take a 68-52 lead with 6:10 left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego State has won 30 straight games against California schools and 23 straight overall in December. … The Dons will play Mississippi in the consolation round Sunday. … Deshawn Stephens chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Aztecs, who were 10-of-19 from 3-point range.
