Miami 67, No. 14 Michigan State 59:
Senior guard Trey McKinney-Jones nailed five of seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 18 points as the host Hurricanes beat the Spartans in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

McKinney-Jones led four players in double figures for Miami (4-1), which improved to 4-0 at home in the teams’ first-ever meeting. Senior guard Durand Scott, in his second game back from a suspension, scored 15 on 6-of-10 shooting. Center Reggie Johnson had 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Junior guard Keith Appling led Michigan State (5-2) with 15 points, but the Spartans shot just 40.7 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the foul line (5-of-11).

Freshman sensation Gary Harris, returning from a sprained shoulder that cost him two games, scored on a putback at the halftime buzzer to put Michigan State up 31-27. Harris finished with 12 points but the Spartans went cold in the second half and saw their five-game win streak end.

At the final buzzer, Miami students rushed the floor to celebrate a rare signature win.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Miami improved to 2-4 in the Challenge, while Michigan State fell to 6-7. … Before Wednesday, Miami coach Jim Larranaga’s last game against Michigan State’s Tom Izzo was George Mason’s 2006 upset of the Spartans on its way to the Final Four. … Spartans guard Travis Trice returned from a concussion to score nine points, hitting all three of his 3-point tries.
