Miami (Fla.) 87, Stetson 79: Center Reggie Johnson had 22 points and 11 rebounds and the host Hurricanes staved off a late comeback by their in-state rival in the season opener for both schools.

Trey McKinney Jones scored 14 points, Shane Larkin added 13 and Kenny Kadji also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Miami (1-0), which was playing without suspended point guard Durand Scott.

Adam Pegg scored all 22 of his points in the second half for Stetson (0-1), which led for most of the first half until Johnson sparked a late run that pulled the Hurricanes into a 34-34 halftime tie.

Miami built its biggest lead at 67-54 with 7:38 to play, getting back-to-back baskets from Bishop Daniels and three free throws from McKinney Jones.

Pegg singlehandedly brought the Hatters back, scoring 13 points in a span of 4:07 to cut the deficit to 74-71 with 3:09 to play. A Chris Perez three-point play got Stetson within 76-74, but Miami answered with a 6-0 spurt to pull away.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Aaron Graham scored 21 points for Stetson, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range. ... Scott must sit out the first three games after he was suspended nine games last season for his role in a scandal involving a Miami booster. ... The Hurricanes shot 52.5 percent (32-of-61) and held a 38-28 advantage on the glass.
