Butler 72, Marquette 71:
Rotnei Clarke sank a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Bulldogs to the win in the opening game of the Maui Invitational.

Clarke, the leading scorer at Arkansas as a junior (15.2) before transferring to Butler and redshirting last season, finished with 20 points. Khyle Marshall, a 6-6 junior forward, scored a career-high 24 for Butler (2-1), which will meet No. 9 North Carolina in Tuesday's semifinals.

Vander Blue scored 21 points for the Golden Eagles (2-1), who had taken a two-point lead with eight seconds left when Junior Cadougan made one of two free throws. Clarke then dribbled up the floor and launched a 30-footer for the victory.

Roosevelt Jones overcame early foul trouble to score 12 points for Butler, and Andrew Smith added 10.

Cadougan finished with 14 points and Davante Gardner had 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Marquette. Butler’s only bench points came on a tip in by Erik Fromm just before Cadougan went to the line the final time.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Marquette reserve guard Jake Thomas scored a three-point play with 31 seconds left, his first points of the game, to give the Golden Eagles a three-point lead with 31 seconds remaining. … Butler freshman guard Kellen Dunham started over senior Chase Stigall. Dunham had combined for 29 points in the first two games, while Stigall, a senior guard who started the 2011 National Championship game, had four. Dunham finished with four points and Stigall went scoreless.
