: Erick Green continued an impressive early season run with 23 points and reached 1,000 for his career as the host Hokies raced past the Keydets.

Green, who also had a team-high six assists, became the 43rd player in Virginia Tech history to reach the 1,000-point mark with a jumper early in the second half. He is averaging 23.0 points on 62.2 percent shooting through three games. Jarell Eddie added 17 for the Hokies (3-0), who got all five starters into double figures.

D.J. Covington led Virginia Military Institute (1-3) with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting. The rest of the Keydets combined to go 20-for-56 (35.7 percent) from the floor in the team's sixth straight loss in Blacksburg.

Green's first shot of the night was a 3-pointer less than five minutes in that forged a 12-12 tie. Marshall Wood buried a 3-pointer of his own on the next possession to give the Hokies the lead for good and Green followed that with a fast-break slam for a 17-12 advantage.

Green had a layup and Wood another 3-pointer to key a 10-0 run later in the half that made it 42-21. Green's jumper 52 seconds into the second half gave him the milestone and put the hosts ahead 50-30. Virginia Tech led by as many as 29 points in the second half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia Military Institute entered having taken 98 3-pointers this season, 25 more than anyone else in the nation. ... Brian Brown, who had made a dozen 3-pointers in the first three games, missed all four of his long-range attempts. ... Sophomore walk-on Will Johnston chipped in nine points for Virginia Tech.
