California 79, Pepperdine 62: Allen Crabbe scored a career-high 33 points and backcourt partner Justin Cobbs added 23 for the host Golden Bears.

Crabbe, a 6-foot-6 junior, scored 24 points in the second half on 7-for-10 shooting. He also had six rebounds and three assists for the Golden Bears (2-0). Cobbs, a 6-foot-2 junior, scored 18 points in the opening half. They combined for 49 points in a season-opening victory Sunday against CSU Bakersfield.

Stacy Davis scored 13 points and Lorne Jackson had 10 for Pepperdine (0-2). Jordan Baker, who scored 21 points in a season-opening loss to CSU Northridge, went scoreless in the first half before finishing with seven points.

Cobbs made a layup with two seconds remaining in the first half to cap a 7-0 run and match California’s biggest lead 36-26. The Waves trimmed the deficit to one in the opening minutes of the second half, but Crabbe scored 11 straight points for California in a 16-5 run that put his team back up by 12 with 12:36 remaining and the Waves never got back within single digits.

The Waves were able to stay close early on by getting second-chance points, but California finished with a 15-9 edge in offensive rebounds.

GAME NOTEBOOK: California guard Ricky Kreklow, a sophomore transfer from Missouri who had surgery in early October to repair a stress fracture in his foot, made his debut for the Golden Bears and finished with three points and a team-high three steals. … California won’t play another home game until Dec. 9 against No. 18 UNLV. … After committing 23 turnovers in their season opener, the Waves had 17 more against California.
