St. John’s 77, Detroit 74: D’Angelo Harrison scored 22 points and freshman Chris Obekpa blocked a school-record eight shots as the Red Storm came from behind to beat the visiting Titans in their season opener.

Detroit led 60-53 with 9 minutes left before a Harrison 3-pointer ignited a 14-2 run that gave the Red Storm a five-point lead - and the Titans (1-1) never got closer than three after that. Juwan Howard Jr. was short on a long 3-point attempt at the buzzer after a St. John’s turnover.

Phil Greene contributed 20 points - including 11 in the first half - and seven rebounds and Amir Garrett added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Red Storm. Obekpa, who topped Robert Werdann’s previous mark of seven blocks, also had 11 rebounds and seven points.

Ray McCallum led the way with 21 points and Jason Calliste added 18 for Detroit, which made nine 3-pointers after connecting for 11 in its opener.

The Titans trailed 25-23 with just under 6 minutes left in the half before putting together an 11-0 run, highlighted by a flying rebound dunk by Doug Anderson. McCallum had 12 points and Calliste 10 as Detroit settled for a 37-29 halftime advantage.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Highly regarded freshman forward JaKarr Sampson missed all six of his shots from the field in the first half for St. John’s and finished with two points. … St. John’s was without swingman Marc-Antoine Bourgault and forward Orlando Sanchez, who have yet to be declared eligible by the NCAA. … The teams have split four games. The Titans beat the Red Storm in Detroit last season.
