Virginia Tech 69, Rhode Island 50
When: 7:00 PM ET, Monday, November 12, 2012
Where: Cassell Coliseum, Blacksburg, Virginia
Officials: # Brian Dorsey, # Bryan Kersey, # Michael Stephens

Virginia Tech 69, Rhode Island 50: Erick Green scored 25 points to tie his career high and Cadarian Raines logged his first collegiate double-double as the Hokies turned back the Rams and improved to 2-0 under new coach James Johnson.

Half of Green's eight made field goals were from 3-point range, and he drew closer to reaching 1,000 points for his career. He stands only 13 points away from the milestone heading into Thursday's game against VMI. Raines added 10 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Hokies to a 39-30 advantage on the boards.

Rhode Island's Xavier Munford compiled 24 points and six rebounds, bouncing back nicely from a 3-of-19 shooting performance in the season opening loss to Norfolk State. That wasn't enough to help the Rams (0-2), who fell into a 13-0 hole and trailed from the outset to keep new coach Dan Hurley winless.

All five Virginia Tech starters contributed to the game-opening 13-0 outburst. The Rams got as close as 28-24 late in the first half, but Green answered by making back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Hokies take a 36-24 advantage into intermission. Virginia Tech led by double digits for the entire second half.

Rhode Island shot 33.9 percent from the field, including 1-for-21 from 3-point range. Forward Nikola Malesevic embodied those struggles, going 1-of-7 and finishing with six points after pouring in a career-high 26 in the opener. Mike Powell was 1-of-12 shooting.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hokies freshman F Marshall Wood totaled four points, four blocks and three rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench. ... Hokies G Marquis Rankin dressed after missing Saturday's season opener against East Tennessee State after two deaths in his family. Rankin did not play. ... Virginia Tech has held its first two opponents to a combined 4-of-37 on 3-point field goals.
