Adreian Payne finished with 16 points and seven rebounds and Keith Appling added 12 points for the top-seeded Spartans (25-7), who will play either No. 5 seed Indiana or 4th-seeded Wisconsin in the semifinals on Saturday.

Michigan State shot 58 percent and converted 8-of-18 3-pointers, taking a 55-39 lead at halftime and stretching the advantage to as many as 28 midway through the second half.

Iowa (17-16), seeded eighth, defeated Illinois 64-61 in the opening round but couldn’t keep pace with the Spartans, who won the previous meeting 95-61 in early January.

Josh Oglesby had a team-high 20 points for the Hawkeyes, who are likely headed to the National Invitation Tournament. Zach McCabe and Roy Devyn Marble each added 13.

Matt Gatens, the team’s leading scorer, didn’t make his first basket until the 8:41 mark of the second half. The senior guard finished with 10 points.

Michigan State, playing without Branden Dawson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the team’s loss to Ohio State on Sunday, outrebounded Iowa 33-21.

Brandon Wood, Dawson’s replacement in the starting lineup, finished with 10 points for the Spartans, who defeated Iowa for the ninth time in 10 tries and extended their win streak in the series to four.
