VIRGINIA 71, MARYLAND 44: ACC player of the year candidate Mike Scott scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds as No. 22 Virginia snapped its two-game skid.

Scott, a senior forward, shot 10 of 20 from the field and continued to carry the Cavaliers (20-6, 7-5 ACC) toward an NCAA tournament berth.

It was UVA’s second straight victory over Maryland after the Terps (15-11, 5-7 ACC) won three straight in the series.

The game was tied 31-31 at halftime, then UVa went on a 14-2 run. The Cavaliers held the Terps to 27 percent shooting for the game. Maryland had just seven two-point field goals.

ACC leading scorer Terrell Stoglin had 14 points to lead the Terps, but shot 4 of 17.

Game Notebook: Virginia G Sammy Zeglinski, who had made 7 of his previous 31 3-point tries, buried 2 of 5 from beyond the arc. …. Terps F James Padgett came off the bench for the second straight game, getting six points and five rebounds. … Virginia G Joe Harris, playing with a broken bone in his left (non-shooting) hand, hit 3 of 7 shots.
