BOXSCORE | RECAP
Iowa 75, Michigan 59
When: 1:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 14, 2012
Where: Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City, Iowa
Officials: # Chris Beaver, # Ed Hightower, # Mike Sanzere
Attendance: 12366

After a pair of blowout losses, Iowa bounced back in a big way in its 75-59 victory over No. 13 Michigan on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Matt Gatens scored a team-high 19 points, Roy Devyn Marble had 13 and Aaron White added 12 for the Hawkeyes (11-8, 3-3 Big Ten), who lost their two previous games by a combined 63 points.

In the most recent defeat, a 95-61 loss at Michigan State, head coach Fran McCaffery drew a technical after berating an official and then slammed a chair during a huddle with his team.

But the Hawkeyes were in better spirits this time around, and for good reason. They took a 33-23 lead into the half and led by double figures for the majority of the second half.

Michigan pulled within 45-37 with 12:42 left, but Iowa — led by Gatens and Melsahn Basabe, who finished with seven points — responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes.

Michigan (14-4, 4-2 Big Ten), which shot just 38 percent, couldn’t pull within single digits the rest of the way as Iowa’s defensive pressure created problems all afternoon.

Zack Novak had a team-high 14 points for the Wolverines, who had their six-game win streak against the Hawkeyes snapped. Tim Hardaway Jr. added nine points on just 2-of-13 shooting.

The win was Iowa’s second in the last five games against a ranked opponent. The Hawkeyes defeated then-No. 11 Wisconsin 72-65 on Dec. 31.
