Matthew Dellavedova scored 26 points as Saint Mary’s defeated No. 23 Gonzaga Thursday 83-62 in a matchup of West Coast Conference heavyweights.

The Gaels, who moved to 5-0 in WCC play while ending the eight-game winning streak of visiting Gonzaga (13-3, 3-1 in the WCC), snapped a five-game losing streak against ranked teams while improving to 12-0 this season at McKeon Pavilion, 16-2 overall.

Dellavedova, coming off a career-high 27 points against San Francisco, nearly matched it Thursday, hitting 10-of-16 shots from the field, including five 3-pointers.

Elias Harris had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Gonzaga, which had an eight-game winning streak snapped.

While much of the pre-game focus was on Gonzaga’s freshman backcourt of Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell, Saint Mary’s redshirt freshman Brad Waldow moved into the spotlight. The 6-foot-9 forward had five of his 17 points midway through the second half before Dellavedova scored eight straight to help the Gaels pull away.

David Stockton knocked down a 3-pointer at the 10:08 mark of the first half to give Gonzaga an 18-15 lead. Saint Mary’s got two of Dellavedova’s 15 first half points and he assisted on a bucket by Mitchell Young to cap a 9-0 run and give the hosts a six-point cushion.

Despite leading scorer Rob Jones picking up his 3rd foul at the 4:34 mark, the Gaels scored the final eight points of the half – six from Dellavedova – to go into the locker room with their largest lead at 37-29.
