When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 4, 2012
Where: Verizon Center, Washington, District of Columbia

Jason Clark scored 18 of his 26 points in the second half and Hollis Thompson hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 0:22 to play to lift Georgetown to a 73-70 victory over Marquette Wednesday.

The Hoyas (13-1, 3-0 Big East), who won their 11 consecutive game, trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half after Todd Mayo hit a 3-pointer with 13:13 to play. But the hosts made a furious rally to come back. And Thompson, who hadn’t scored since the 13:24 mark of the first half, nailed a 3-pointer, then hit another jumper to tie the game at 66-66 with 2:37 left. The teams traded buckets on four consecutive possessions before Thompson drained a long three.

Georgetown came into the game No. 1 in the Big East in scoring defense, allowing 57.1 points per game, but Marquette (12-3, 1-1) passed that mark on Darius Johnson-Odom’s 3-pointer with 12 minutes left. The Hoyas acted more like the Big East’s top defense in the final 12 minutes, holding the Golden Eagles to just three made field goals, and stopping two potential game-tying three-point attempts in the final five seconds.

The teams played as evenly as possible through the game’s first eight minutes, each hitting 9-of-13 field goals for a 21-21 tie at the 11:58 mark. And though Georgetown took a brief lead of 24-23 on a field goal by Clark, the visiting Golden Eagles stormed ahead with a long run.

Thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Johnson-Odom, who had 13 of his team-high 18 points in the first half, and three consecutive buckets from Mayo, Marquette went on a 14-1 spurt to take a 12-point lead, and went up by as many as 16 at 43-27 when Jae Crowder had a layup on Vander Blue’s sixth assist of the half.
