Antoine Young scored a game-high 19 points as No. 19 Creighton rallied from an eight-point deficit and overcame an off night from Doug McDermott to defeat host Wichita State 68-61 on Saturday.

The Bluejays (11-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley) desperately needed a victory after opening the conference season with a home loss to Missouri State as no team has won the MVC after starting 0-2 since 1993.

Wichita State (10-3, 1-1) double and triple-teamed McDermott (24.8 points per game) and was able to hold the nation’s second leading scorer to a season-low 12 points.

However, the Shockers made only 8-of-28 field goals in the second half, including 1-of-14 from long range. Meanwhile, the Bluejays hit 4-of-7 3-pointers in the second half.

The Bluejays also got 11 points from Grant Gibbs and eight from Josh Jones, both of whom were held scoreless in the first half.

Creighton led 14-5 early before Wichita State outscored the Bluejays 34-17 the rest of the first half to lead 39-31 at the break. The Shockers closed the half on a 12-3 run.

Carl Hall led Wichita State with 17 points and 13 rebounds. He picked up his third foul midway through the second half with the Shockers leading 46-41. With Hall on the bench, Creighton was able to take a 52-49 lead. Toure’ Murry, a preseason All-Missouri Valley pick, was held to five points.

Creighton improved to 26-4 since 1994 when holding Wichita State to less than 70 points.
