Hollis Thompson had 17 points and eight rebounds as No. 16 Georgetown defeated Memphis 70-59 Thursday at the Verizon Center.

The win was the Hoyas’ (10-1) second against the Tigers (6-5) in the last month, having previously defeated them 91-88 in overtime in the Maui Invitational on Nov. 23.

Georgetown led by as many as 21 in the second half, but Memphis used an 18-5 run to pull within 61-54 with 3:59 left. The Hoyas, however, responded with a pair of Thompson free throws to extend the lead back to double digits with 2:39 remaining.

Thompson finished 5-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range for Georgetown (10-1), which took a 35-28 lead into halftime after forcing 10 Memphis turnovers.

Jason Clark, who had a game-high 26 points in the Hoyas’ first meeting with Memphis, finished with 18 points. Markel Starks added 14 points for Georgetown, which will open up Big East play at No. 4 Louisville on Dec. 28.

Memphis entered the game with the nation’s 11th-best scoring offense, but was outmatched and held to its lowest point total of the season. The Tigers also committed 18 turnovers, one more than the last time they played the Hoyas.

Chris Crawford had a team-high 17 points and Will Barton added 12 more for the Tigers, who shot 38 percent from the field and lost for the third time in their last four games.
