Oregon rode the hot shooting of guard Devoe Joseph to break open a close game in the second half and ran past Prairie View A&M 74-66 in the second day of the three-game Global Hoop Sports Showcase in Eugene, Ore., on Wednesday.

Joseph, a transfer from Minnesota who just became eligible earlier this month, was making his second start of the season. He hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the second half and scored eight of Oregon’s first 10 points of the half as the Ducks stretched their lead to double digits for the first time on a Joseph free throw at 11:57.

The lead got up to a dozen points before Prairie View put together a push, fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers by Louis Munks that trimmed the Oregon advantage to 68-64.

Joseph stepped up at that point and converted two free throws to get the Ducks’ lead back to 70-64. Guard Garrett Sim and forward E.J. Singler added two free throws apiece, keeping the Panthers at bay.

Sim led all scorers with 20 points, one more than Joseph.

Prairie View held the lead several times in a see-saw first half, including Jules Montgomery’s 3-pointer with 1:33 to play that put the Panthers up 30-29. They had a chance to improve on that, but Sim came up with a steal and a subsequent layup for a 31-30 lead.

E.J. Singler closed out the first-half scoring with a 3-pointer good for a 34-30 halftime lead.

The Panthers got 12 points from sophomore forward Demondre Chapman and guard Jourdan DeMuynck had 10.
