Cleveland Melvin had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead DePaul to a 63-58 victory over visiting Cal Poly on Wednesday.

DePaul (9-3) won its sixth straight game and improved to 6-1 all-time versus current Big West opponents.

Cal Poly (8-4) had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Melvin knocked down two free throws to ice the game for the Blue Demons with five seconds remaining. Brandon Young also scored 16 points for DePaul, and added six assists.

The Mustangs pulled to within one at 6:03 on a bucket from Amaurys Fermin, who finished with 11 points and eight assists. With Cal Poly down by three, Dylan Royer missed a chance from beyond the arc to tie the score with just over five seconds left in the game.

The Blue Demons threw a full-court press at the charging Mustangs and slowed the pace on offense, trying to disrupt Cal Poly’s momentum. DePaul attacked the rim and was 9-for-14 from the foul line in the second half.

The Mustangs won the hustle battle, diving for loose balls and grabbing the tough rebounds. Those extra efforts translated into 21 second-chance points for Cal Poly. It outrebounded DePaul 39-32, marking the 10th time in their 12 games the Mustangs have won the fight on the glass.

Cal Poly went 0-for-6 from 3-point range in first half and finished 3-for-17.
